Legislators created this crisis. Only they can fix it.
Michigan’s catastrophic care crisis is here, and it’s only getting worse.
Thousands of Michigan victims of devastating car accidents were plunged into chaos after a government-mandated 45% cut in reimbursements for specialized care went into effect in July 2021, as part of the fee schedule in Michigan’s new auto insurance law. Their providers and caregivers are rapidly discharging them from service as they can no longer afford to treat them under the new reimbursement rates.
Patients with severe injuries, like those to the brain and spinal cord, are winding up in hospital ICUs as the ongoing rehabilitative care they’ve relied on to maintain lives of dignity and independence is ripped away. Providers, including those in rural areas where care options are already scarce, are being forced to close their doors because they can’t survive the fee schedule’s nearly 50% pay cut, leading to layoffs of more than 1,500 frontline workers.
Since July 1, we’ve received dozens of reports from gravely injured patients who have seen their lives upended as the fee schedule cancels the post-acute, specialized care that has allowed them to live and thrive. Suddenly, they have nowhere to go and nobody to hire who will accept a drastically lower pay rate. This, even though they paid their insurance premiums faithfully with the expectation that — should the worst happen — their care would be covered for as long as they needed it.
This is a humanitarian crisis born from a government-mandated price fix, and only the legislature can undo it. Last legislative session, bills were introduced that would have provided the narrow, long-term legislative solution to the 45% reimbursement cut. None, however, were allowed hearings in the face of fierce lobbying from the auto insurance industry.
We need your help to continue the fight
Tell your lawmakers that you support a long-term fix for auto accident victims, and share how the law has impacted you, your business, or your family and friends. Check out this take action form to get started.

With our #MICareCrisis Impact Dashboard, we are tracking the devastating influence of the 45% reimbursement cut. If you are a survivor who has lost care, or a business that has closed down, reduced services, or discharged patients, please get in touch with us using the contact form below.
Who supports ending the #MICareCrisis?
Affected patients and their families
If the new fee schedule goes into effect as is, even family caregivers able to keep their loved ones at home will see their reimbursement rates gutted.
Michigan voters
In a 2018 statewide survey, nearly two-thirds of voters said we have a responsibility to continue our long-honored promise to provide care for auto accident victims with catastrophic injuries.

Michigan Occupational Therapy Association
A voluntary professional association of occupational therapy practitioners who are dedicated to supporting the profession through advocacy and communication.
