MBIPC applauds auto insurance premium refunds to drivers following years of gouging, and warns against shirking responsibility of caring for accident victims

Gov. Whitmer takes decisive action on refunds, in contrast to months of only passive responses related to #MICareCrisis legislative solutions for severely injured survivors

BRIGHTON, Mich. — (Nov. 3, 2021) — Michigan Brain Injury Provider Council President Tom Judd issued the following statement in response to the announcement from the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association Board unanimously approved acting on Gov. Whitmer’s directive to refund up to $5 billion in premiums to Michigan drivers:

"Michigan consumers are absolutely owed a refund on their premiums, because auto insurance companies have gotten away with gouging them for years," said Tom Judd, president of the Michigan Brain Injury Provider Council. "But make no mistake: This move cannot be taken as an excuse to shirk the responsibility of caring for victims of catastrophic auto accidents, who paid for no-fault insurance through their premiums."

"Gov. Whitmer announced this intended move on Monday and the MCCA Board made this happen two days later. This shows that when the governor sets her mind to do something, she can get it done. Where has she been when it comes to advocating for a legislative change to keep auto accident survivors -- some of whom are completely paralyzed and need to be turned every two hours -- from losing their care? No shortage of half a dozen bills have been introduced, with nothing but passive responses from the governor."

Judd called for bold leadership.

“We implore the MCCA to refund what is owed to drivers, while ensuring that the catastrophic fund remains viable for current and future crash victims that deserve the highest quality of care that was promised to them,” he said. “And we implore the Governor to show this type of bold leadership in addressing the #MICareCrisis by calling for urgent and immediate legislative action.”
