MBIPC Applauds Gov. Whitmer for Her Commitment to ‘Get It Right’ and End the Crisis in Care
Judd: ‘The solutions have been advanced by the Senate—it is now in the hands of the House and Governor Whitmer to get it across the finish line.”
BRIGHTON, Mich.—(Jan. 3, 2024)—Tom Judd, executive director of the Michigan Brain Injury Provider Council, today applauded Governor Gretchen Whitmer for the commitment she made in a conversation with Tim Skubick to work toward passing a legislative solution to end Michigan’s crisis in care for drivers injured in car crashes.
In the interview, Gov. Whitmer said that she and the legislature would “get it right;” however, she fell short of recognizing the solutions that have already been passed by the Senate with Senate Bills 530, 531, and 575.
Judd shared this statement below:
“Every day, people are catastrophically injured in car crashes but are unable to access the qualified and specialized intensive rehabilitation and care necessary to maximize positive outcomes due to the system put in place by the 2019 auto no-fault reform law—even if they are making the informed decision to pay for auto insurance policies that promise lifetime benefits.
For over three years, crash survivors, families and care providers have called for solutions to ensure access to care. And to her credit, the Governor has consistently indicated an interest in signing a law to fix the problems created in 2019. She now has her party in the majority and a bill package passed by the Senate in a bipartisan manner that contains reasonable solutions.
The Senate got it right and we look forward to working with the Governor’s administration and House leadership to move these solutions forward so a bipartisan bill can finally reach the Governor’s desk. We can then move on and turn the page from this sad chapter in our state’s history. Further delay and inaction will result in further unnecessary turmoil, pain, and suffering. The solutions have been advanced by the Senate—it is now in the hands of the House and Governor Whitmer to get it across the finish line.”
